(Volleyball 8AAA) Moorhead volleyball team earns second straight trip to state @MHSSpuds

For the second time in as many years, Moorhead's volleyball team is making a trip to the state tournament.

The top-seeded Spuds swept No. 2-seed Willmar in the Class 3A, Section 8 championship Saturday, Nov. 5, to clinch the return trip. The Spuds won 25-15, 25-17 and 25-21.

The Champlin Park volleyball team rallied for a 17-25, 25-16, 20-25, 25-21, 15-13 win over Wayzata in the Section 5AAA final.

It's the second straight season the Rebels have defeated the Trojans in five sets in the section final and the fourth straight loss for Wayzata in section finals.

Back in August after leaving the Section 7AAA volleyball scrimmage, Grand Rapids coach Bryan Fideldy said he thought the Thunderhawks had a legitimate chance at advancing to the state tournament. After two months of play a lot changes through the course of the season, but what remained for the Thunderhawks was a drive to come out on top in the section.

Eagan coach Kathy Gillen has a custom of staying seated during games unless she absolutely needs the attention of all her players. With an experienced lineup that returned every player from last year’s state championship team, Gillen feeds her in-game adjustments through her captains who relay the message to the players on the floor.

Lakers headed back to state with win over Shakopee  The Section 2AAA title match felt a little like deja vu. The top-seeded Prior Lake volleyball team swept second-seeded Shakopee Nov. 5 at New Prague High School to earn its second straight crown (25-16, 25-22, 27-25). Last fall, the Lakers also swept the Sabers in the section title match in a battle of the top-two seeds in another cramped, small gym in Waconia.

Growing up, sisters Erin and Kira Fallert never dreamed they would be playing volleyball on the same varsity roster, let alone going to the state tournament together. This season that notion became a reality, as they and their Concordia Academy teammates defeated DeLaSalle 25-9, 25-19, 25-17 in the Class 2A, Section 5 championship Thursday night at the Academy of Holy Angels.

For the first time in 21 years, the Academy of Holy Angels have advanced to the state volleyball tournament by winning the Class 2A, Section 4 title on Thursday night. Heading into a title bout against the defending champion, Hill-Murray, the Stars fell behind early then roared back to complete a 23-25, 25-14, 25-12, 25-22 victory at Bloomington Kennedy High School.

The Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights used an awesome block to dethrone the defending state champion Belle Plaine Tigers on Saturday night in four sets. The match was moved to the Taylor Center on the Minnesota State Mankato campus and those in attendance were treated to some terrific volleyball.

Madie Bigelow and her teammates are headed back to the state volleyball tournament. This time, they'll get to play in it. Bigelow and K-M's other three seniors were just freshmen the last time the KoMets made it to the Xcel Energy Center, in the fall of 2013. She was there, watching from the stands and soaking in the atmosphere.

Lynette Kaster was well aware of Abi McGlynn. Her Win-E-Mac High School team had prioritized slowing down McGlynn, a sophomore who recently reached 1,000 kills in her volleyball career. Those plans went awry Friday, however.

The Cook County Vikings volleyball team is returning to the state tournament. The Vikings claimed the 7A tournament championship with a victory over Deer River on Saturday, Nov. 5.

The Underwood girls volleyball players have had an entire year to think about their last section championship experience. They lost. They did not on Saturday, Nov. 5, when Underwood claimed a 3-2 Class 1A, Section 6 championship over Sebeka—the same team that beat the Rockets in five sets in last year's section title match.

(Volleyball 4A) Heritage Christian sweeps Nova Classical for the Class 1A, Section 4 title @HeritageAcadMN

Heritage Christian banded together to get a 25-23, 25-20, 25-18 win against Nova Classical and take home the Class 1A, Section 4 championship Thursday night at Bloomington Kennedy High School.

The Eagles were composed throughout the match, unwilling to let a hard-fighting Knights team any chance at a victory.

(Volleyball 3A) TMB headed to state for 3rd straight year @TMBPanthers

The Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Panthers are returning to the state tournament for the third straight year. The Panthers are looking for their first championship since 2004. In the Section 3A Championship, the top two teams from the South and North faced off. No. 1 TMB defeated the No. 1 Minneota Vikings in three very close sets Saturday night at SMSU, (25-19, 25-23, 25-22).

Mariah Schroeder could feel the sense of urgency prior to Saturday's match. "I was excited," the Caledonia senior said. "It was either state or go home and I wanted state so bad, because I've always had to go home. "Finally, we get to go to state. It's great!"

Clinging to the Section 7AA championship trophy, Hermantown volleyball coach Sue Wasbotten took a seat on her team’s bench Saturday evening at Duluth Denfeld High School. Wasbotten, coming down from the emotional rollercoaster the Hawks had just ridden, was spent.

The Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Rebels found a great way to keep their 2016 volleyball season going Saturday, Nov. 5, in Pelican Rapids. The Rebels defeated Wadena-Deer Creek 25-23, 25-21, 25-22 for their first Minnesota Class 2A, Section 8 championship since 2007.
